Microsoft Office Project Portfolio Server was a foundational standalone server product developed by Microsoft to provide enterprise-level Project Portfolio Management (PPM) capabilities. Originally acquired as a specialized software package named UMT Portfolio Manager, Microsoft rebranded and integrated it into the Microsoft Office ecosystem as Project Portfolio Server 2007. It was specifically designed to help organizations align their project investments with top-level business strategy, analyze resource capacity, and manage project demand from a centralized dashboard.
Following the 2007 lifecycle, Microsoft entirely merged Project Portfolio Server’s advanced portfolio selection and optimization features into the core architecture of Microsoft Project Server (starting with Project Server 2010), which has since evolved into the cloud-based Project Online and modern Microsoft 365 Planner systems.
